Wife’s Death

I intended to post at The Blogging Journalist on Monday night, January 4, 2010. However, I didn’t due to the death of my wife around 5:15 p.m. on January 4. Her funeral was January 7, 2010, in Chicago, USA. I will try to resume blogging on Monday, January 11, 2010.

Can Blogging Promote Literacy?

The Independent of London reported December 3, 2009, that, the National Literacy Trust today published a study “which has found that although nearly half of all UK schoolchildren claim writing is "boring", blogging and social networking greatly improve their attitudes and make them much more confident about their writing skills.”See “Don't knock blogging – it's the answer to our literacy problems.” According to The Independent:

“The research, which examined the attitudes of 3,000 children in England and Scotland towards writing, found that 61 per cent of those who keep a blog and 56 per cent of those who are on social network sites feel they are good or very good at writing, compared with only 47 per cent of those who don't engage with text online.

The report said, “Pupils who are active online also tend to write more in traditional forms such as short stories, letters, diaries or song lyrics.”

Will The Blogging Journalist Continue to be Published?

Although I hadn’t blogged at The Blogging Journalist since January 13, 2009, when I posted an item headlined “How often Should You Post to Your Blog?”, I have been blogging regularly at The Diplomatic Times Review and The U.S. Foreign Policy Monitor and Review. I’ve been trying to get these blogs to the point where they will at least pay hosting cost at Six Apart and SoapBlox.

Also, I see great possibilities in international affairs and diplomacy blogging during the Obama era. I’ve been thinking about pointing The Blogging Journalist in that direction. I love it too much to pull the plug on it.

"What defines a highly successful blog or blogger over the millions of others?" asks Australian blogger Duncan Riley over at The Inquisitr.  "We know that content is key, and that increasingly with the emergence of Blogging 2.0 that participation is also vital, but neither account for success exclusively," he opines.

Why Dr. Arnold Kim Wants to Blog Full-Time

New York Times reporter Brian Stelter, who made his reputation as the founder and editor of CableNewser, which became TV Newser, when he went to work at MediaBistro, today has an insightful article on Dr. Arnold Kim, proprietor of the popular MacRumors blog.

'Team Blogging' in Ohio, USA

Lisa Renee Ward at Glass City Jungle in Toledo, Ohio, USA, noted in a July 18, 2008, article in the Toledo Free Press:

Team blogging may conjure up the image of sports blogging but the concept of team blogging in politics is one that many blogs find to be a great way to create more great content and at times some different viewpoints than just one person blogging their thoughts.  Here in Ohio we have many great examples of blogs that have two or more co-bloggers.  Sometimes they are aligned politically, other times they are of a differing party or perspective.

'The Big Picture'

One of the most enjoyable blogs I currently read is The Big Picture, a boston.com site published by The Boston Globe. It reminds me of the Life magazines I use to read with great anticipation during the 1960s.

I think you'll like it, if you aren't already familiar with it.

The Blogging While Brown Conference

Hopefully, I'll Resume Blogging Around July 12

March 26, 2008. That's date of my last post at this site before taking a hiatus to rest and improve my health. I intend to resume blogging here at least by July 12. I'm looking forward to rejoining the conversation about blogging and traditional journalism.
